Oh, little did I know, naming you after my mother gave an insatiable keenness…with quest for inquisitiveness, ultimately leading you to be one of the Great Human Remains Detection Search and Recovery dogs. You chose me, without a doubt, as you have given me more than I could ever imagine. Our journey together to search for the missing has taken us for miles over terrain, to helicopter, to motorboat with floating ice chunks on the Wabash, to airboat, to fast water survival after capsizing a canoe; so as to bring closure after death to grief stricken familes. Only today do I fully understand grief, as I have lost my SAR partner, best friend, and spirit guide.
Java had the most expressive eyes that would connect with mine in an instant. One particular time, her friend and pack-mate, Boogie, knocked her off a tall ledge into the water. Her eyes locked into mine as if to say, “You got me?” The next time, it would be me that locked onto her eyes as we capsized in a canoe during an HRD search in fast water. She stopped midstream for me to catch up with her. I grabbed her tail as she pulled me to shallow, safe water. Our eyes locked in time, as if for me to say, “You got me?”
You had not been as most HRD SAR partners, as you utilized spirit guides to help find the missing. A quote from animal communicator: “It has been an enormous privilage working with you and Java over the years. She taught me a great deal of how animals work with spirits. I’ve been doing this many years and I can honestly say, Java is one of a kind. I’ve never met or worked with another SAR animal who worked the way she did and with such incredible accuracy and I even read for ****, one of the last World Trade Center dogs to pass away.”
We are connected as kindred souls; she is my split apart, the better half, the part that is good in life! She is a service Search and Recovery dog. She is my HERO!

Barb, The testimony you give for Java was absolutely beautiful. I know how much a dog can mean to a person. There were days I don\'t know what I would have done if it haven\'t been for mine.

I know her heart is lost to Java now, but she will be at The Rainbow Bridge waiting for you.

in the way you used to be;
you are still connected by a
Cord no eye can see.
So whenever you need to find her
you’re never far apart
if you look beyond the horizon
and listen with your heart.
I know Java will be waiting for you at the Rainbow Bridge one day.

Barb - It was a privilege to meet you and Java at Mary\'s house. I could tell what a special soul Java was, and the great bond that you shared. There\'s no way to take away the pain you feel at losing Java, and I\'m not sure that it would be right to do so, even if I could. To remove all grief, all sense of loss, would be to trivialize the partnership I know you had with this wonderful dog.
All dogs are wonderful friends, and give so much, but to have a dog that\'s also a working partner, as well as a friend, just makes the bond between you deeper than words can describe.
I\'ve seen you and Java working together, and it was a pleasure to see. I know she gave you so much, but you gave to her, also. I\'ve always believed that my dogs picked me, as much as I picked them, and I saw that partnership with you and Java.
One of my vets once told me, as I cried over that terrible decision that had to be made, that if I didn\'t love my dog enough to shed tears and grieve, then I shouldn\'t have a dog. I grieved, and chose another dog to be my friend and partner, but part of me will always miss the ones who went on before us.
So grieve for Java, but remember the good times also, and all the good that you two accomplished for the lost people and their families, when they couldn\'t help themselves.
So grieve, but remember that Java wouldn\'t want you to hurt too long.
RIP, K9 Java. Run free.
